JMZ Science Community Programs

To advance our mission of expanding access to nature and science education through community engagement, the Friends partners with the JMZ to offer JMZ Science Community Programs, ensuring that all families can participate in the high-quality science education programs designed and delivered by JMZ educators, regardless of financial, physical, and cognitive barriers.

JMZ Science Community Programs includes a variety of on-site and location-based science education opportunities, including field trips to the JMZ and open space preserves, in-school and after-school science lessons, summer camp enrichment support, and parent-participation preschool classes. By funding programs throughout the community, children are able to engage in learning experiences in trusted settings as well as spaces that expand their horizons

All JMZ Science Community Programs are made possible through collaboration – with Friends’ donors, JMZ Education, and schools and community organizations in East Palo Alto, eastern Menlo Park, and Redwood City. These programs help students build confidence, strengthen scientific literacy, and see themselves in STEM fields. By creating equitable opportunities for exploration and discovery, the JMZ Science Community Programs empower young people to envision futures as scientists, innovators, and leaders.

JMZ Learning Labs: Science At School

Since 1999, the Friends has funded the JMZ’s science education program in schools in East Palo Alto and eastern Menlo Park. Today, JMZ Learning Labs: Science At School has grown to include schools in Redwood City and ensures that students in under-resourced schools receive the same high-quality science lessons as their peers in Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD).
