While general care and maintenance of the zoo and its animals is managed by the City of Palo Alto and JMZ staff, the Friends contributes to enhanced operations by funding special projects and specialized care.

Animal Sponsorships

Through our Sponsor an Animal program, the Friends supports the exceptional care of all JMZ animals by covering the specialized diets, veterinary care, habitat maintenance, and enrichment activities that keep animals healthy and engaged. With more than 50 animal species calling the JMZ home, the generosity of our community ensures that all animals receive the elevated care they need.

Environmental Enrichment 

Friends support has been particularly impactful through environmental enrichment – an activity, device, or accommodation added to an animal’s environment to provide physical, mental, and social stimuli. JMZ zookeepers tailor enrichment for each individual animal’s needs, enhancing their wellbeing in engaging ways.
